Rosie The Riveter

The Great Pioneer

Rosie the Riveter was the pioneer of a campaign aimed at recruiting female employees for the aerospace and defense industries during World War II. She has became perhaps the most iconic image of working women. American women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers during the war, as widespread male enlistment left gaping holes in the workforce. Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home.

Rosie Project

As the Rosie’s pioneered the future of Aerospace and Defense, they responded to the United State’s call during war-time by stepping up to fill positions that were traditionally filled by men. Mae Krier, 96, an original Rosie the Riveter, worked at Boeing, producing B-17s and B-29s for the war effort from 1943 to 1945 in Seattle. Saying she wants to inspire a "We Can Do It!" attitude among young girls everywhere, she also is advocating that Congress award the Rosies the Congressional Gold Medal for their service. During the Logistics Officers Association Conference, Mae Krier reiterated that as a pioneer, she and other Rosie’s picked up the ball and now its the next generation’s time to run with it.

This generation’s Rosies are military spouses—both male and female—who are ready to pioneer and mold the future of aerospace and defense. Military spouses are the backbone of supporting our war fighters. The Rosie Project is dedicated to removing barriers of entry for military spouses as the need for Information Technology and Cyber Security specialists grows.

Meet the Founders

  • Aniza M. Brown

    FOUNDER | INNOVATOR | DISRUPTER

About me: I am Impact Driven to remove barriers for women in the DoD and Tech. I am a leader, family woman and have an Electrical Engineer degree with a strong software background.

The Why: The Rosie Project idea originated from a need in the DoD to remove barriers of entry for military spouses and ensure they have lucrative careers when and where they may PCS. As a disrupter in tech, it is important to create change because I can. I am driving this change now because I am in a position where I can make change with partners I have made in the Aerospace and Defense ecosystem.

    Current Positions:

    CEO Rosie Project

    Co-Founder and Host of Motherhackers

Chairwoman of Silicon Slopes Aerospace and Defense

    Chairwoman of Silicon Slopes Ogden

  • Beth Rhoades

    FOUNDER | STRATEGIST | BUILDER

About me: I build programs that enable people to realize their dreams and achieve their potential. I am a teacher and a leader through education. I am a mother who allows her children to learn through experiences and failure. A failure is always an option, and it's beautiful.

The Why: Everything people learn now is preparing them for something else in the future. I enable them to find what's next and empower them to seize new opportunities. Military spouses are a powerful force for good as they have supported their loved ones through military service. The Rosie Project transfers those superpowers into meaningful careers that also support the mission and service of the armed forces. As a strategist and builder, the opportunity to provide education and career potential to military spouses sent "the fizz" through my bones. This is what I live for.

    Current Positions:

Executive Director of Programs at Weber State University

CONNECTOR | FULL OF QUESTIONS | MANDALORIAN FOUNDLING

About me: Since being in the Army and having stacks of deadlined systems under my responsibility, I’ve been passionate about finding a better way to ensure the right capabilities get to the mission users. While I don’t have the formal coding background, my focus and passion is on ensuring that tech and mission needs are aligned, and calling out the forces that hinder success.

The Why: I believe strongly in what has been created with The Rosie Project. I hope I can help to provide the connections, support, and energy needed to help the program scale to help our greater national security.

  • Candace Clegg

    AF SPOUSE | O-H! | SUPPORTER

About Me: I am an Air Force wife and mom of 3. We have raised our kids to be strong and independent with a heavy focus on STEM, especially our daughters. We are a huge sports family, bleed scarlet and grey, Bengals, Reds, and Blue Jacket fans, and can usually be found at some sort of practice or game/meet.

The Why: With 20+ yrs of active duty under our belts, I could not even begin to tell you how much of a need there is for something like this. As a brand new spouse fresh out of college, I was told that officer wives do not work, they volunteer. I had just graduated from college and moved across the country eager to use my degree. To say I was frustrated was an understatement. I have known several other spouses over the years that have not been able to use their degrees (ranging from physicians assistants to nurses to educators) and they have also found temporary jobs at each assignment and/or stayed home to raise their family. The Rosie Project provides spouses with an in demand skill set that they can take with them wherever they PCS to support their nation alongside their spouse.

  • JD Duvall

    MENTOR | VETERAN | INNOVATOR

About me: I am a 20 year Air Force veteran with 10 years Industry experience and over 20 years in non-profit organizational management. I love connecting problems with solutions, bringing people to the stage to talk about making the Logistics Enterprise stronger and championing the people and ideas that will bring groundbreaking opportunities to a larger community.

The Why: The Rosie Project is my Why. It embodies the energy and passion I feel everyday for wanting to find ways to help others. As a Military Spouse myself I know the challenges we face and I want to help out where there is goodness. As a previous Science Teacher I know the importance of STEM and when we can create a pathway for education and employment for our military spouses our nation and service will be stronger because of it.

    Current Positions:

    President, Parker DuVall

    COO Women In Defense Logistics

Board Member of Logistic Officers Association's Board of Advisors

  • Steve Floyd

About me: I’ve spent my professional career either serving in the armed forces or supporting them. I’ve spent 9 years in the navy as a submarine officer in active duty and now in the reserves. In my civilian life I’m a systems engineering manager supporting an Air Force program.

The why: I’ve seen how difficult it is for every part of family life in the military. A career for the spouse is generally not prioritized and sometimes not even acknowledged. I want to help military spouses have more options and be able to pursue their career too!

    Current Positions:

    System Interfaces Manager, Northrop Grumman

    Future Ops, United States Navy
